Just getting Nipper ready for Permit and have discovered holes and bad corrosion (again!!) in my mild steel exhaust pipes. Can anyone recommend a good place to have stainless pipes manufactured or where I can buy thin walled stainless tube and elbows. I have flanges (laser cut no less!) just need someone to do the welding and bendy bits.
Thanks
Stuart

Re: Exhaust Pipes
Hi Stuart,
JP exhausts look very good, and would be interested to hear how much they charge. A friend and local inspector who is also a CAA approved welder is local to me, he does a very good and economical job. His website is: www.richardkimberleyservices.co.uk

Just received a budget quote from JP exhausts @ £75 per pipe with me suppling flanges
. They only bend miniimum 1.5mm wall tube
, I was hoping for 20swg (about 1mm) to save a little weight
. Do you know what gauge most other people use?

Just been looking at the recommended website and photos of your rebuild, looks great, on your exhaust system are the front and rear pots (per side) connected by a slip joint with one common outlet per side, I can't quite make it out from the photos.

Re: Exhaust Pipes
Hi Stuart,
I am based at a noise sensitive site, so had to do something to reduce the exhaust noise. This works very well. It is mild steel which was nickle plated (£100!), so was hopefull that it would last forever, unfortunately the temperatures are such that the plating has failed already on the silencers, so if you find a supplier for the 20swg stainless who can bend to this radius then count me in for a set of bends, and I will get Richard K to weld it up. The system was made from VW "J" tubes that you can by from a VW aftermarket exhaust supplier, they are only about £6 a piece, I used 6 in my system, with a couple waisted due to mistake. My inlet manifold is also made from these J tubes. Pictures here.
The pipe you see welded to the bottom of the silencer has some fins welded to the side of the silencer inside to provide a greater heated surface area. Using both of the heat exchangers I can get the required 30deg temp' rise.

Re: Exhaust Pipes
Hi stuart,
Not sure which model Nipper you have, mine been a Mk1 with the engine hanging out in the breeze
A friend, who is deceased from cancer, gave me same very nice 90 degree,31mm ID, 1mm wall bends. This are used in the dairy, wine, bottled water, food industry.
With a little cutting and welding, one ends up with nice tight bends without excessive exit angles from the flange. Mine is a 4 into 1 which resulted in a smoother and quieter engine.
I used an old engine as a jig and slotted the flanges for easy fitting and removal
