Fabric behind seat.

Postby richard » Wed Jul 16, 2008 7:10 am

Does anyone know if the fabric behind the seat is needed? It looks like it might stop loose bits flying to the tail during aeros. Mine does not go all the way down to the floor it stops at the seat base.
Many thanks Richard

Richard,

The material "bag" does not go all the way to the floor because if it did it would foul with the elevator bell crank /pushrod/cables. In any event you are only allowed 9 kg baggage, so the bag doesnt need to be that big anyway. If you wish to carry large light items (sleeping bag, small tent etc there is scope for putting them in the port wing root (where the original Pye radio used to go) but you should have some sort of light ply box in there to prevent any fouling with the aileron wires.

Hpoe this is of use.

Hi Richard,

The fabric as I understand it is just there to "finish" the interior of the turtle deck. On G-ONCS I have installed a light plywood floor and aft bulkhead with a small cubby box just behind the seat for small tools/fuel tester etc. This it quite effective for storing said small tools and a tent/sleeping bag provided the weight stays within your W&B, which can be quite individual for different Nippers. When I restored mine it had 3x2.2kg weights in the tail, now I have the fin/rudder mod' they are not required. I will post a photo, but it doesn't do justice to the whole installation, will take some more photos and post them on the forum.

I had planned these new panels, so welded 4130 brackets to the fuselage frame to support the panels, however, you could use "P" clips to do the same job.

The photos don't show the cubby box which was added later, will try to add those to the forum soon.

Hope that helps,

Neil

Richard,

Niel's compartment behind the seat looks great but I am more inclined to follow Pat's response in that the fabric closure with small baggage space discourages the unwary from carrying too much weight aft of the CG.

You can fit a whole spare prop' in there! Well some of it! Could do with making the fuz wider tho'!

Yes you are absolutely right, it looks like you could put a lot in there, a good regard for W&B is a must.
